parenting coaches

Should parents coach their own children in youth sports?
Some do it just so their kid makes a team and then they favor their child when he/she isn’t very good.
My kids were all good in sports, made any team they tried for and played a lot, and I didn’t coach. But I saw this happen.
I have seen both good and bad points in this. My H coached our daughters youth soccer team. It was a great experience for her because of her shyness. She definitely needed his encouragement .
My son played youth fb for several years. His dad is not one of coaches. He did not see near as much playing times as some of the boys whose dads had coached for years. We knew that he was just as good as some of the boys who played more. When he reached the middle school level and had non parent coaches,he began playing constantly on offense and defense both. Too much in a moms opinion lol. Kinda wanted to yell hey coach give that boy a rest. Luckily he did decided to stick it out for those couple of years when he didn’t play much.
I also witnessed alot of both mental and physical abuse from father coaches during youth wrestling. Nothing sadder than to see a child cowering while hes being shoved around and chewed out by dad. Of all the sports our kids played wrestling is the only one where the police had to be called.
