Should I move to a different country for a new life?
I’m a reporter living in Sydney and am just really unhappy with my life.
I don’t speak to either of my parents who live in sydney and just feel stuck here.
I feel like I’m drifting apart from a lot of my friends and I can’t relate to a lot of people here.
I have qualifications in television as I have done some work for a TV network and my dream job is to work on the Oprah show. Should I apply for a job there and move to Chicago if I get it?
This is not a stupid question – I have worked for big news companies in Australia so I think I would actually have a chance at the job. (I’m 25)
You can try for it, love.
If you think you can go for it, and that it will make you happy, then try for it. The worst that can happen is you get turned down and get to find a new opportunity that you were probably fated to take.
Just remember though, America is in recession. I know a lot of my Canadian buddies that have tried to get work there have gotten rejected because the government doesn’t want to grant a whole lot of work visas. Also, American based companies are getting a lot of complaints within about hiring people who aren’t American because of rising unemployment. One of my friends was actually fired from his job because the company needed to cut jobs…and he didn’t have citizenship. But who knows, it might be different in your field.
It’s most of the reason why I have stayed in Canada…it didn’t used to be this way.
But yes…it can’t hurt to try. Just don’t be afraid of failure either. Take all of the good and bad in stride.
